Sometimes a family just needs a little help to give hem a change at a solid future. With the Section 8 program, Caribou Housing Authority pays a portion of an eligible families’ rent directly to a private landlord. The family does their share and pays between 30 – 40% of their monthly income toward rent so that they may budget and save.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN SECTION 8

FIND HOUSING WITH YOUR VOUCHER

While on the program, families can use their vouchers to rent a house, duplex, or apartment within the Caribou area. Click here to find a listing of landlords to use your Section 8 Voucher.

HOUSING QUALITY STANDARDS INSPECTION

HUD requires Housing Quality Standards (HQS) inspections before move-in and annually to ensure subsidized units are in good, safe, decent, and sanitary condition.

HOW RENT IS CALCULATED

The amount of rent you pay is directly tied to your monthly income.  CHA will calculate your TTP (Total Tenant Payment), the amount of money you pay for housing.

ANNUAL RE-EXAMINATION PROCESS

HUD requires an annual review of all Section 8 participants. CHA schedules annual appointments about 4 months before the lease expires.

FAMILY OBLIGATIONS

As an applicant or participant in the Section 8 Program, your family has the responsibility to abide by the rules and requirements of the program.

MOVE PROCESS

Participants in Caribou Housing Authority’s Section 8 Program can transfer their assistance from one rental unit to another.

MOVING WITH YOUR VOUCHER “PORTABILITY”

Portability is the process that allows an eligible Section 8 applicant or participant to move anywhere in the United States where there is a housing agency operating the federal HCV program.

REPORTING INCOME CHANGES

Participants in the Section 8 Program must report, in writing, changes in income within 10 business days of the occurrence

ADDING/REMOVING HOUSEHOLD MEMBERS

All changes in household composition must be reported to CHA in writing within 10 business days of the occurrence.

TERMINATION OF ASSISTANCE

CHA may, at any time, terminate program assistance for a participant, for any of the following grounds:

APPEALS & HEARINGS

If you are a program participant you may appeal a decision by CHA affecting your eligibility or the amount of your assistance.
